Sixth Annual Lit & Luz Festival, "Movement," Looks at Migration, Social Movements, and Bodies in Motion
CHICAGO—MAKE Literary Productions is proud to present the sixth annual Lit & Luz Festival of Language, Literature, and Art October 12-19, 2019, at venues throughout Chicago.
The only US cultural festival to feature Mexican writers, Lit & Luz fosters the creation of new art through international collaboration and essential dialogues between residents of Mexico and the United States. This year’s festival theme, “Movement,” asks the participants and audience to consider migration, social movements, and bodies in motion.
This year's festival features more than a dozen free bilingual events, including conversations, film screenings, live storytelling, and much more. Award-winning Mexican American author Luis Alberto Urrea will present the festival's inaugural keynote address at the Chicago Cultural Center on Sunday, October 13 at 3 PM. The festival’s closing event is on Saturday, October 19, when the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago partners to present the Live Magazine Show from 6-8pm. The “Live Magazine Show” is a ticketed program in which paired Mexico- and US-based participants debut their multimedia creative collaborations.
Other highlights of the 2019 Chicago programs include interactive printmaking with Undocumented Projects; a conversation on 50 years after Stonewall and Latinx identities; #MeToo and the women writers' movement in Mexico; live storytelling about migration experiences; readings and interviews; an experimental music performance, and a film screening. "At its heart, Lit & Luz is a cultural exchange between writers, visual artists, and musicians from Mexico and United States," says Lit & Luz Managing Director Sarah Dodson. "With the festival taking place first in Chicago in the fall and Mexico City the following winter, it is an evolving conversation between two countries. We choose to focus on collaborations in order to foster meaningful and lasting professional relationships and cross-cultural friendships." Past participants include luminaries such as Cristina Rivera Garza, Valeria Luiselli, Julián Herbert, José Olivarez, Jac Jemc, and Erika L. Sánchez.
The festival is honored to host an exemplary cohort of Mexican writers and artists, including:
Diana del Ángel, poet, essayist and human rights defender, and author of Procesos de la noche
Verónica Gerber Bicecci, a visual artist who writes and author of Empty Set, translated by Christina MacSweeney (Coffee House Press, 2018)
Israel Martínez, an internationally-exhibiting artist who with works with sound and other mediums.
Sara Uribe, Lit & Luz Writer in Residence and author of the critically-acclaimed Antígona González, translated by John Pluecker (Le Figues Press, 2016)
Dalia Huerta Cano, award-winning cinematographer, editor and director on documentaries and fiction films

Aclamados artistas y escritores mexicanos se unen a sus pares de Chicago en una semana entera de conversaciones y eventos culturales
CHICAGO, 2 de agosto de 2019 - En su sexta edición, el Lit & Luz Festival of Language, Literature, and Art , organizado por MAKE Literary Productions, continúa promoviendo la creación artística a partir de colaboraciones internacionales al tiempo que crea un espacio para generar diálogos esenciales entre habitantes de México y Estados Unidos.
El tema de esta edición, “Movimiento”, busca promover reflexiones sobre la migración, los movimientos sociales y los cuerpos en tránsito entre los artistas participantes y la audiencia del festival.
El festival se llevará a cabo del 12 al 19 de octubre con más de doce eventos gratuitos que tendrán sede en distintas locaciones de Chicago. La clausura ocurrirá con el Live Magazine Show el sábado 19 de Octubre en el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de esta ciudad, de 6 a 8 PM. Este magno evento consiste en un programa en el que se presentan las colaboraciones realizadas entre los artistas y escritores de México y Estados Unidos que participan en el festival.
Además de las lecturas, conversaciones y performances, este año el festival incluye una conferencia inaugural , en la cual el multipremiado escritor mexicano-estadounidense Luis Alberto Urrea hablará sobre los temas centrales de esta edición. La cita es en el Chicago Cultural Center el Domingo 13 de octubre a las 3 PM. La programación completa del festival estará disponible en litluz.org.
En esencia, Lit & Luz consiste en un intercambio cultural entre escritores, artistas visuales y músicos de México y Estados Unidos. Al ocurrir primero en Estados Unidos y luego en la Ciudad de México, el festival busca abrir un diálogo entre ambos países. El énfasis en las colaboraciones, por su parte, busca crear lazos y relaciones profesionales, así como vínculos amistosos entre las dos culturas. En ediciones anteriores han participado reconocidos artistas y escritores, como Cristina Rivera Garza, Valeria Luiselli, Julián Herbert, José Olivarez, Jac Jemc y Erika L. Sánchez.
Este año, el festival se complace en presentar a un grupo excepcional de escritores y artistas mexicanos, entre otros:
