Acclaimed Chicago Authors and Artists Join Mexican Authors and Artists for a Week of Cultural Events, Conversations, and More in Mexico City March 8-12.
CHICAGO/MEXICO CITY, January 15, 2022—Now in its eighth cycle, MAKE Literary Productions’s Lit & Luz Festival of Language, Literature, and Art continues to support the creation of new art through international collaboration, and make space for essential dialogues between residents of Mexico and the United States. This year’s festival theme,“Structure,” considers the physical structures that house us, political and societal structures that surround us.
The hybrid festival runs March 8-12 with more than a dozen free, bilingual events. During the day, the festival will present virtual programs, including a keynote, with a wide range of participants and topics. In the evening, the festival will offer in-person programs at venues throughout Chicago.
The festival’s signature event, the Live Magazine Show, will be co-presented on March 12 with El Museo Universitario del Chopo. At this program, pairs of Mexico- and US-based participants present the multimedia collaborative pieces they have been working on in the months prior.

At its heart, Lit & Luz is a cultural exchange between writers, visual artists, and musicians from Mexico and United States. With the festival taking place first in Chicago, then Mexico City, it is a conversation between two countries. We choose to focus on collaborations in order to foster meaningful and lasting professional relationships and cross-cultural friendships. Past participants include luminaries such as Cristina Rivera Garza, Valeria Luiselli, Julián Herbert, José Olivarez, Jac Jemc, Erika L. Sánchez, and Luis Albero Urrea.
The festival is honored to host an exemplary cohort of Mexican writers and artists, including
Jazmina Barrera, editor and co-founder of the exceptional independent press, Ediciones Antílope in Mexico City. On Lighthouses (Two Lines Press, 2020), translated by Christina MacSweeney, “brings to English-language readers one of the most beautiful books in recent Mexican literature.”
Rocío Cerón is one of the major Mexican poets and multimedia artists of her generation. Her work is experimental, combining poetry with music, performance, and video.
Pergentino José is a writer and educator from Oaxaca. Red Ants (Deep Vellum, 2020) is his first book in English, and the first literary translation into English from Sierra Zapotec.
Chantal Peñalosa is an award-winning visual artist based in Tijuana, Mexico. Her work reflects on time through daily life interventions that explore our notions of work, waiting, and repetition.

Julietta Cheung is an artist with a text-based and language-inspired practice. She is an assistant professor in Contemporary Practices at SAIC.
Krista Franklin is a writer and visual artist, the author Too Much Midnight (Haymarket Books, 2020) and the artist book Under the Knife (Candor Arts, 2018). She is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant and has been published widely.
Jose-Luis Moctezuma is a xicano poet, essayist, and researcher. His poetry collection Place-Discipline won the 2017 Omnidawn 1st/2nd Poetry Prize.
Santiago X is an Indigenous futurist, multidisciplinary artist and architect specializing in land, architectural, and new media installation.

Reconocidos escritores y artistas de Chicago se reúnen para una semana de eventos culturales, charlas, y más en la Ciudad de México 8 al 12 de marzo.
CHICAGO/MEXICO CITY JANUARY 15, 2022—Lit & Luz, Festival de Arte, Lengua y Literatura de MAKE Literary Productions, en su octava edición, continúa con el apoyo a la creación artística a través de la colaboración internacional y la creación de espacios para diálogos esenciales entre habitantes de México y Estados Unidos. El tema del festival de este año es “Estructura” y considera las estructuras físicas, políticas y sociales que nos habitan y nos rodean.
El festival, en formato híbrido, tendrá lugar del 8 al 12 de marzo con más de una docena de eventos gratuitos y bilingües. A lo largo del día, el festival presentará programas virtuales, incluyendo un evento de apertura con un amplio rango de participantes y temas. Por la noche, el festival ofrecerá programas en persona en foros de Ciudad de México.
El evento principal del festival, el Live Magazine Show, será presentado el 12 de marzo en colaboración con El Museo Universitario del Chopo. En este programa, artistas residentes de México y Estados Unidos debutarán en dueto piezas colaborativas multimedia en las que trabajaron durante los meses anteriores.
En su núcleo, el festival Lit & Luz es un intercambio cultural entre escritores, artistas visuales y músicos de México y Estados Unidos. Ya que el festival se celebra primeramente en Chicago y después en Ciudad de México, se trata de una conversación entre dos países. Queremos enfocarnos en colaboraciones para promover vínculos profesionales duraderos y significativos, así como amistades interculturales. Los participantes incluyen reconocidos autores como Cristina Rivera Garza, Valeria Luiselli, Julián Herbert, José Olivarez, Jac Jemc y Erika L. Sánchez.
