The 11th annual Lit & Luz Festival of Language, Literature, and Art—as featured in Publishers Weekly, Chicago Review of Books, Block Club Chicago, and more—takes place October 26  to November 2. This one-of-a-kind cross-cultural, bilingual festival brings together writers and visual artists from Mexico and Chicago for a week-long series of public programming at venues throughout Chicago. 

Inspired by the media landscape of both presidential elections taking place in the countries this year, the theme of the festival is “Saturation/Saturación.” Participants will consider concepts such as intensity, combination, absorption, maximums and limitations as they respond to the urgent political, social, and environmental issues confronting both countries.

A full festival schedule is coming soon—stay tuned! Audiences can expect free, bilingual author conversations; artist talks; writing workshops; live storytelling; music; and much more. This year’s Collaboration Cohort—a carefully curated group of ten of the most innovative contemporary artists from Mexico and the US—includes Oaxaca-based author Clyo Mendoza, whose first novel Furia, was translated into English, Portuguese and Italian and won the Premio Amazon Primera Novela award; internationally renowned, self-taught artist, Mexico City-based artist Ana Gallardo, whose 2024 solo exhibition will travel between CA2M, Spain and MUAC, Mexico; Chicago-based artist Alberto Aguilar, recently recognized with the prestigious Latinx Artist Fellowship; Chicago author Diego Báez whose poetry collection Yaguareté White (University of Arizona, 2024) was a finalist for The Georgia Poetry Prize and a semi-finalist for the Berkshire Prize for Poetry; and more. Participants are paired up to create multimedia, collaborative pieces which debut at the festival’s signature event—the Lit & Luz Live Magazine Show, presented in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago on November 2nd.

We’re excited to announce a new Lit & Luz curatorial team! Miguel Jiménez (Chicago), Lit & Luz Book Club Founder, is working as Literary Arts Director along with Esteban King (CDMX) and Zespo (Chicago) Co-Visual Arts Directors to curate the Collaboration Cohort and Festival programming. 

The annual festival has two iterations, beginning in the fall in Chicago and reconvening the following spring in Mexico City. In this way, Lit & Luz breaks the boundaries of what we imagine a cultural festival to be, and opens a dialogue not just between artists, but between countries—an exchange of language and ideas that is increasingly crucial in our global political climate. Lit & Luz is produced by the literary arts nonprofit, MAKE Literary Productions, with support from partners and sponsors including the National Endowment for the Arts, Poetry Foundation, DCASE, IACA, UIC's Center for Latinx Literature of the Americas, The Mexican Consulate in Chicago, and more. It’s a not-to-miss cultural event, with past participants including luminaries such as Edra Soto, Krista Franklin, Cristina Rivera Garza, Valeria Luiselli, José Olivarez, Jac Jemc, and Erika L. Sánchez.

La 11ra edición anual de Lit & Luz, Festival de Lengua, Literatura y Arte, con apariciones en Publishers Weekly, Chicago Review of Books, Block Club Chicago, y más, tendrá lugar del 26 de octubre al 2 de noviembre. Este festival multicultural y bilingüe, único en su tipo, reúne a escritores y artistas de México y Chicago para una serie de eventos públicos de una semana en distintos venues de Chicago.

Inspirado en el panorama mediático de ambas elecciones presidenciales ocurridas este año en los países involucrados, el tema del festival es “Saturation/Saturación.” Lxs participantes considerarán conceptos como la intensidad, combinación, absorción, máximos y limitaciones mientras responden a los urgentes problemas políticos, sociales y ambientales que enfrentan ambos países.

El programa completo del festival se anunciará pronto, ¡mantente al tanto! El público podrá disfrutar conversaciones bilingües y gratuitas con escritores; charlas de artistas; talleres de escritura; narración de historias; música; y mucho más.
