Vive el Live Magazine Show, la celebración principal del Festival Lit & Luz. Cada año, el programa Lit & Luz apoya la creación de nuevas obras de arte de colaboración entre escritores, artistas visuales, y músicos de Chicago y la Ciudad de México. En los meses previos al festival, equipos de artistas participantes de las dos paises trabajan a distancia para co-crear un performance incorporando sus respectivos medios. Las piezas se presentan durante el Show tanto en español como en inglés y a menudo exploran la relación entre los idiomas, las formas de arte, y las culturas de Estados Unidos y México. Contaremos con música de Vania Fortuna, y con la presencia de nuestra escritora en residencia Valerie Meyer Caso. Conducirán el show Kamilah Foreman y yolanda segura.

Cada miércoles, SOMA abre sus puertas para ofrecer de manera gratuita un espacio para conversaciones, performances y presentaciones donde expertos de diferentes disciplinas discuten sobre sus prácticas. En esta ocasión, la artista visual, arte educadora, docente y gestora cultural puertorriqueña Edra Soto —participante actual del Festival Lit & Luz— ofrecerá una charla donde abordará sus trabajos más relevantes y los proyectos que desarrolla actualmente.

Cambios drásticos: Prácticas artísticas en tiempos fugaces

En esta charla, cuatro artistas reflexionarán sobre los significados cambiantes y los diversos enfoques que atraviesan sus prácticas cuando sus preocupaciones y procesos cambian de ubicación, enfrentándose a nuevos contextos. Ya sea a través del lenguaje, las formas de exhibición, los espacios discursivos, las ideas de representación, raza, clase, género, ecología; o bien, de los rituales individuales o colaborativos de producción y presentación artística, la plática explora cómo las prácticas artísticas se ven transformadas por cambios drásticos en los entornos socioculturales.

Flor Flores es unx artista transdisciplinarix y poeta, cuyas obras creativas giran en torno al concepto de pertenencia queer. Su más reciente proyecto le da continuidad a la historia de Kiki, una mariposa monarca queer que disfruta ir a la discoteca y que se ha convertido en la figura central de todo un proyecto editorial experimental, bilingüe y colaborativo [kiki-club.com]. Acompaña a Flor en la Librería Somos Voces junto al poeta Lázaro Izael, quienes compartirán los resultados del proyecto, leerán fragmentos de los textos y presentarán algunas de las obras visuales incluidas en Kiki — A Sky of Changing Lights, an Anthology by Kiki Club Editions, editado por Flor Flores y Miguel Jiménez, con contribuciones de Paul Tran, Dale Ratcliff, Miguel Jiménez, Jimena González, Flor Flores, Melissa Castro, Almandina L. Goldstein y stina.

Experience the Live Magazine Show, Lit & Luz’s signature celebration. Each year, Lit & Luz supports the creation of new collaborative artworks between writers, visual artists, and musicians from Chicago and Mexico. In the months leading up to the festival, teams of participating artists from the two countries work remotely to co-create a performance incorporating their respective mediums. The pieces are presented during the show in both Spanish and English, and they often explore the relationship between the languages, art forms, and cultures of the United States and Mexico.

Ambassador Reyna Torres Mendivil, Consul General of Mexico in Chicago, will provide opening remarks at the event.

Artist Huehuecoyotl (Fernando Palma Rodríguez) will discuss his artistic practice with Vocalo’s Rocío Santos. Huehuecoyotl lives in the agricultural region of Milpa Alta outside Mexico City, where he runs Calpulli Tecalco, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of Nahua language and culture. Central to his practice is an emphasis on indigenous ancestral knowledge, both as an integral part of contemporary life and a way of shaping the future. 

El artista Huehuecoyotl (Fernando Palma Rodríguez) hablará de su práctica artística con Rocío Santos de Vocalo. Huehuecoyotl vive en la región agrícola de Milpa Alta en las afueras de la Ciudad de México, donde dirige Calpulli Tecalco, una organización sin fines de lucro dedicada a la preservación de la lengua y la cultura nahua. Un elemento central de la su práctica es el énfasis en el conocimiento ancestral indígena, como parte integral de la vida contemporánea y como una forma de dar forma al futuro.

Reflections on Collaboration: 10 Years of the Lit & Luz Festival

In this panel discussion, participants from previous editions of the Lit & Luz Festival reflect on the significance of collaborations and the challenge of carrying them out. They also explore the lessons learned and difficulties faced when working with someone from a different discipline, at a distance, and in a different language. Additionally, the panel aims to showcase the range of experiences that the festival has accumulated over its 10 years of existence, which stem from individual development and extend into the realms of the public and the collective. With Kirsten Leenaars, Laleh Motlagh, Julietta Cheung, and Gabriel Ojeda-Sagué. Moderated by Daniel Monroy Cuevas

En esta mesa de diálogo, participantes de ediciones anteriores del Lit & Luz Festival dialogan sobre la importancia de las colaboraciones y el reto de llevarlas a cabo, así como sobre los aprendizajes y dificultades que conlleva trabajar con alguien de otra disciplina, a distancia y en un idioma distinto. An Artist Talk with Huehuecoyotl (Fernando Palma Rodriguez)

Visiting artist Huehuecoyotl (Fernando Palma Rodríguez) will give an in-depth presentation of his artistic practice spanning over three decades. Combining his early training as mechanical engineer and as an artist, Huehuecoyotl 's installations and robotic sculptures utilize custom software to perform complex, narrative choreographies that respond to issues facing indigenous communities in Mexico, addressing human and land rights, violence, and urgent environmental crises. Accompanied by visiting curator and Lit & Luz Visual Arts Director CDMX, Esteban King, the two together will discuss the themes and concerns behind Huehuecoyotl’s artistic practice.
